Finding a good synth has always been a challenge for me due to there are so many options now in the world to choose from. I have used quite a few VST instruments over time, and while many of them sounded good, they often felt either too not exactly what I wanted or needed once I started pushing into deeper sound design. After properly using Serum 2 by Xfer Records, it quickly became one of the synths I rely on the most.
From a personal standpoint, what immediately stood out to me was the balance between power and usability. The interface is very clean and logically structured, which makes navigating between oscillators, modulation, effects, and filters feel natural. I never feel like I am fighting the plugin to get results. Everything feels placed where you would expect it to be, which makes long sound design sessions much easier.
From a technical perspective, Serum 2 feels more like a complete sound design workstation than just a wavetable synth. The multiple oscillator types really change what you can do creatively:

- Wavetable oscillator for classic Serum style sounds
- Sample oscillator for incorporating custom audio
- Granular engine for more experimental textures
- Spectral processing for advanced sound manipulation
This combination gives me the flexibility to approach sound design from multiple angles without needing several different plugins. That is something I really value in my workflow.
The modulation system is another area where I think Serum 2 really shines technically. The drag and drop routing is extremely intuitive, and being able to visually see LFO shapes, envelopes, and modulation depth makes complex routing much easier to manage. I personally find this speeds up my workflow massively compared to synths where modulation feels hidden behind menus.
Technically some of the features I use the most include:
- Advanced LFO editing with custom shapes
- Multiple filter types including analog style and digital filters
- A flexible FX rack with distortion, OTT style compression, reverb, delay, and multiband processing
- Built in arpeggiator and sequencing tools
- High quality unison control with detailed detune and stereo options

The effects section especially feels production ready. I often find I do not even need external effects because the built in processing already sounds clean and professional. That helps keep my projects simpler and more efficient.
Performance wise, I have also noticed it feels well optimised considering how much it can do. Even when stacking voices or using multiple effects, it still feels stable in my projects, which is important when working on larger sessions.
From a personal creativity point of view, this is where Serum 2 really wins me over. It is one of those synths where I often open it just to design one sound and end up creating several ideas instead. The workflow encourages experimentation, and because it is easy to adjust things quickly, I stay in a creative mindset instead of a technical one.
If I had to mention any downside from my experience, it would only be that the depth might feel intimidating if someone is completely new to synthesis. There is a lot available. That said, I actually think the visual design helps reduce that learning curve compared to many other advanced VST synths.
From my own real usage, Serum 2 feels like a synth that grows with you. You can start simple, but as your sound design knowledge improves, the same plugin continues to offer more depth instead of forcing you to upgrade to something else.

Preset Packs
Xfer Records provides various preset packs that you can get your hands on to give you a kick start. This also shows you how well the VST synth works. With so many other producers and sound designers around the world there is plenty of resources to find even more presets both free and paid.
Here is a few places that you can get your hands on Serum 2 presets to get you started:

Serum 2 Price
At the time of writing this Serum 2 costs $249 USD, It does come with lifetime free updates which I find is amazing. If you wish to try out Serum 2 before you buy you can get a demo version which is limited to 15 minutes.
Conclusion
My personal verdict: 9.5/10 ⭐
For me, it hits the perfect balance between deep technical capability and ease of use. It is powerful enough for serious sound design, but intuitive enough that I can just open it and start creating without slowing down my ideas. That is exactly what I want from a modern synth.
Where To Find Serum 2
The original goal behind creating Serum was to build the kind of synthesizer that simply was not available at the time. The vision was a wavetable synth that delivered exceptional sound quality, combined with a visual and creativity focused interface that made sound design enjoyable rather than frustrating.
It was also designed to offer serious depth when needed. Users can create, import, edit and morph wavetables, then manipulate them in real time during playback. This makes it just as powerful for advanced sound designers as it is inspiring for everyday music production.
